Let’s talk about SEO, let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be, let’s talk about SEO.
SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a strategy used by website owners to get more traffic by ranking higher in search engines.
After submitting my first article under work placement at Overtime Heroics MMA, I was messaged by chief editor Makoa Goble, who claimed that I should’ve stuck to the SEO guidelines to optimize search engines and therefore gain more clicks on my article.
While hitting 62 on the SEO scoring system, I was told that I should’ve been aiming for 80, suggesting that I was not even close to professional standards.
As a trainee sports journalist, finding new ways to edit work can be daunting and a headache. It can also lead to self-doubt as to whether you should be aiming to be in the professional industry.
With these concerns at mind, I messaged Makoa and asked him about the SEO scoring system and how to get the most out of it. Makoa suggested that ‘practice makes perfect’ which is a saying that’s stuck with me ever since.
Referring to the saying of ‘practice makes perfect’ could be a saving grace in the sports journalism industry, as I believe that without failure, you will never make it to the top.
Receiving the feedback of Makoa gave me a new form of confidence when facing this minor adversity. I learnt that no matter how daunting a new form of editing can be, practice will make perfect.
